Humphrey

 

Meet Humphrey, the model for my next art quilt. Isn't he the most handsome goat you have ever seen?

I'll show you what I've done so far.

 

Started out pulling every fabric I thought might work and threw in a pile. Humphrey is there overseeing the whole process. He wanted to make sure I didn't make him pink and lavender as he is a very macho,

 

I traced his main features to make a line drawing then blew it up 200%

When picking out fabrics I am laying each one where it would go so I know they play well with its neighbor.

 

 

Parchment paper goes over the drawing and Humphrey is being fused together.

 

Some aren't the right size, why I don't know since I traced from the drawing. No problem, that's the beauty of fusible. I just slap a scrap of the same color under to fit.

Basic Humphrey is put together,time to find a background. This one is to light. White blends in.

 

This is better and since Humphrey lives in Hawaii I think this works.

Humphrey's mom is on an online quilt group that I'm in and we are both doing one of her goats.

This is as far as I've gotten so far but will share more next week.

Maybe he will have eyes and a nose by then.

Hummingbirds

This weeks project is the ever popular hummingbird. They can't help but put a smile on your face if one is lucky enough to see one. They hover over our flowers in the summer drinking the nectar. The little wings go so fast you can't even see them. They love bee balm and so do I so that the flower I chose for my quilt.

I use parchment paper to build my fusible "bird parts"

Once ironed and fused you can pick up the parts and move them around.

Or on a moonlit evening.

Still working on this one but close enough to show you.

More Cairns Art

I can't seem to get enough of making these cairns or rock stacks.

Here are a couple that I finished this week.

I've always loved this quote

 

I used the serenity rocks method for this one.

Added an interesting stick from the beach at ausable point and some shells.

 

And one using the fusible method with a pieced beach. Gotta love that footprint fabric!

The lighthouse is a button.

The weather here in Vermont has been extraordinary at least on my days off . I feel very blessed.

I hope your summer is just as nice and if you are in the part of the world where it is the dead of winter - your time will come ;-)

Fusible tips

 

I started a rather complicated fusible appliqué project today and wanted to share the way I usually tackle a project like this.

 

 

I make a line drawing trying to keep it as simple as possible. Just basic lines and shadows. All sections are numbered.

Then I flip it over and trace again to get the pieces reversed. I then use this to trace all the pieces on fusible web. Anything that is large with no sharp cornered I do on freezer paper for less glue bulk but in this case the face #5 is the only one.

On the bigger pieces cut out the inside for less glue bulk and remember to label each piece and put an arrow so you know which way is up.

 

You can buy appliqué pressing sheets but good old kitchen parchment paper works just as good. You can build your piece on it and the glue will not stick to the paper, just on the fabric that you place under it.

 

Put the parchment paper over the right side pattern and you can see thru it to see where to put your pieces.minlike to build in chunks. Here is an ear with a eye.

 

The ears were made then the top goes on.

 

Keep your inspiration photo close by especially when choosing fabrics.

And we have a sheep! Ready to pick out a background then will be shaded or painted, not sure what and of course quilted. I can pick her up and move her around now.

Hopefully next week she will be done and I will tell you her story and where I found the photo of this adorable sheep.
