WIP

Works in progress this week

Quilting a red winged blackbird in front of a moon. Blackbird is inktense pencils. There is more to this quilt that will be revealed upon finishing but I wanted to show you the quilting of the moon. McTavishing works really well on moons ;-)

Finished piecing the tumbling charms. That flowered fabric on the right will be the backing. Quilting may take me awhile even though I'm sure I will do something easy and basic but that means boring and I tend to put those projects on the backburner but we shall see. I am listening to a good audiobook right now called the Kraken Project so it just may get done. How should I quilt this though - I'm thinking just meander in the white but the colored squares? What color thread would you use?

And a small, really small notebook cover. This will be folded in half so the notes will be on the front and the pencil on the back.

We are enjoying a streak of warm weather for November and sun which is unheard of for us in Dreadvember. Usually dark and dreadful - this year so far it's been divine! I wish that was me in the kayak but I was gazing at the glorious ness of the lake and sunset the other evening (or late afternoon, really since sun sets around 4:45pm) and just wanted to share
:-)

Summer's Serenity

Summer is here and along with it a chance to get outside and enjoy the peace

Of a sunset kayak cruise with a little buddy

Or the serenity of a misty morning

The beauty of my snowball tree on bloom

This was started from a sapling my mother gave to me 30 years ago that she took from her tree that started as a sapling from her mothers tree. It is gorgeous! I wish I had someone to hand down the tradition but will enjoy the tree and think of my mom and grandmother Hathaway whenever it blooms.

Back to quilts - the kayak and serenity mist were finished this week. I traced my own feet for the kayak one and yes my feet are kinda wierd looking but whose feet aren't really?

The mist is put on with white fabric paint in a bouncing motion with a big brush. I had the dog hairless at first and kept looking at it and felt it needed something. So last night I was feeling brave

And gave him some fur

It doesn't show up that great on the light background - here's the back

The quilting shows well on the back :-)

Enjoy the summer and quilt on!

Kayaking cousins quilt

My two adventurous cousins took a day long kayak trip last summer and went to explore caves in this island on Lake Champlain. So I used this picture that they took of the island.

And took the feet from this picture (Facebook pic of the two cousins feet)

And made this art quilt!

One cousin is the camping woman of the woods type

And he other is alittle more girly and is a nurse in the breast cancer ward in the hospital

I used my new inktense pencils to make the feet - love them!

Amazing I get anything done after running around with my new pup Zu Zu. Here she looks like an angel but she is into everything and has chewed up half my house already.

This WAS a spool of aurifill thread I found on the floor when I got home yesterday.

How can I get mad at this cutie pie though
: -)

Mountain warrior pose

If I practiced yoga I would like to stand on top of a mountain at sunrise and do the warrior pose like this. I would feel powerful and peaceful all at the same time. But alas I don't practice yoga so I made this quilt.

That's a part of a necklace bead up on the sky pretending to be a moon.

I love all these bits of yarn fibers (bushes)

I also finished another kayak quilt. This one I tried making the closer water darker with a different fabric. It didn't blend quilte the way I thought it should so I took a light blue fabric pastel and lightened the dark blue abit to try to make the transition from dark to light alittle less in your face. It did help.

This is the inspiration photo

I probablly shouldn't show this because the toes got sort of warped or something during the quilting. I'm using black thread and FMQ around the toes and it seems to distort things. I wonder if I should just draw the little piggies in black pigma pen and then quilt with monofilament to quilt it down?

What would you do?

Kayak

I've only kayaked a couple of times but loved it. And do enjoy a good putting your feet up selfie.

So when I saw this photo I wanted to make a quilt.

First I quilted the water, sky and trees. A little McTavishing sky and McDowelling water.

(In case you don't know my last name is McDowell) lol!

Then added the kayak and couched down some yarn. Note the difference in picture quality. The others had a day light bulb in the lamp which is in my sewing room. This one is just a regular bulb. The daylighting you can get at any hardware store and they aren't expensive at all.

I tried shading the feet and screwed it up here. Looks like she was walking in mud :-/

I used watercolor pencils and did not like the outcome.

But I simply went back over the feet with a lighter color and cleaned off the mud.

I'm liking this and am starting another one with different fabrics and mood. I need different feet too.

;-)
