Land of Zu improved

Much better thanks to a suggestion from Glen, Inktense pencils and a quilted moon

This is the before - what a difference a moon makes

And this is the Zu being my co pilot - ever since she saw the movie Ace Ventura Pet detective, she hangs out the window shouting "ALRIGHTY THEN!"

(Don't worry I was on a dirt road going 10 mpr while taking this picture)

And last but not least finished one of these fabric baskets I love to make.

Those are fishing flies on the outside. Why fishing flies?

Why not?

Flying over mountains last week

I haven't paper pieced in years and now I remember why. I wanted to participate in a swap type thing on Facebook so decided to give it a try.

This is my first attempt - see the propellers are to small and I had to add some chunks to fill in on the right. Then when I measured it was 1/2" to small :-/ but I did it again using huge chunks of fabric and cutting it down as I went and it came out ok. Not my forte but I'm glad I conquered the challenge.

Now on to the fun stuff! Back to my roots with a mountain landscape.

Should I put rocks on the left! Does it look unbalanced to you?

I started this last week and am finished except that last adding rocks part, if you think I need it.

Enjoyed making that one so much I started another. These are easy to do and enables me to play with my stash which is my favorite thing to do:-)
We are having a stretch of ridiculously gorgous sunny, low 80's, low humidity weather right now so I'm off for a hike and a swim -
Have a great week and get outside!

Stream / lake Champlain

All UFO's needed to be finished this week so I valued bring as many items to the fair to sell.

More paint was added to the stream and then quilted with white thread in the white parts of the water. It's about 11" square so I mounted on a painted 12" canvas.

Doesn't the sound of water soothe your soul? It does mine.

This has been in the drawer for over a year. It's very small and only had the lake but I added a cairn and once mounted on black canvas it really pops and shows off the beautiful colors. And added one of my favorite quotes by Frank Lloyd Wright.

Speaking of lake Champlain I am leaving today for a camping / family reunion on the lake at Ausable Point. My favorite place to go on the lake over on the New York side near Plattsburg and the weather is supposed to be sunny, high 70's low 80's. Can't get much better than that !

Have a wonderful week :-)

Serenity 2

What have I been up to quilt wise this week?

Finished another dog on the dock looking at the mist quilt. I think serenity is a good name for this.

That's what I feel sitting on a dock on a quiet morning in the summer.

I'm making a pattern for download on craftsy for this so will be doing one more to make sure I have all the components right.

I had made this little cairn mini quilt awhile ago but just mounted it on stretched canvas. I happened to be in Micheals and saw some 12"x12" black canvas on sale. This was so easy since I didn't even have to paint the canvas. The word was printed out on freezer paper backed fabric. Serenity again! Hmmmmmm...... I must have serenity on the brain. Could be worse. Anyway I tried using fabric medium instead of mod podge to glue and coat the word and liked it better. Seems to blend better and not so glossy. Everything else was glued down using my trusty glue gun.

And last but not least I'm free motion quilting away on a fun project that I will share with you next week.

Have a creative quilty week!

WIP Boxing Day

I hope everyone had a happy Christmas and can continue that Christmas joy into the new year and beyond.

Mine was quiet just how I like it with a long walk with a friend and a prime rib dinner after.

(I was in bed sleeping by 8:00) woot! Woot! - the perfect day:-)

So today - Still working my Nepal quilt

This past week I worked on the hillside. It went from this

To this

Then this

And here is where I am now. I added single crochet yarn to the green grass areas and started sewing them down to the top of the green areas, then realized it looked better on the bottom :-/

Not sure if it's worth ripping out to have them all the same or not sure I even can. It's sewn on by machine very securely with backtracking etc. so probablly will leave it. What do you think? Should I channel my inner anal perfectionist tendencies that barely exist or just let the yarns lie where they may?

A quiet Moment between friends (this is a pic of one already made and sold)

It's going on the design wall for a few days to ponder over while I work on a quiet moment between friends that a friend requested. Perfect timing since I need to walk away from Nepal and go to the mountains with the dogs.

Have gotten this far and will play more today.

A fun quilt to make ;-)

Happy Sewing Boxing Day!

iF you are on twitter at all there are usually others tweeting quilty stuff and showing what they are doing on Boxing Day so check out

Acorns

Fall is upon us! Love the cooler but yet comfortable weather. Perfect for walking in the woods which is my favorite thing to do (next to playing with fabric of course). The acorns are really abundant this year so I started acting like a squirrel and collected a bunch.

I used my easy easy landscape pattern moon over the mountains to make a little art quilt.

I then painted a 9" by 12" stretched canvas with a reddish maroon, let it dry and added a gold tannish color.

Then got out the old glue gun and glued my acorns and a few other goodies picked up in the woods.

Hint: with acorns the caps usually fall off when they dry so glue the caps onto the body of the acorn first.

I printed out the word reflection on a tan paper then used modge podge to put on the canvas.

This idea of using the stretched canvas brings these small art quilts to a whole new level.

To attach the quilt to the canvas I'm still experimenting. I've tried heavy duty Velcro which worked great but it can get expensive if you make a few of these. This one, since I had the glue gun out anyway I used that and it seems to hold fine. I read somewhere that someone sewed it on by hand. I think I'll try the next one that way and see how it goes.

Have you ever mounted an art quilt on stretched canvas?

What method do you use?

Enjoy the fall!
